Dr Liming Liu
(PhD, Toronto, 1990)
Assistant Professor

Research Interest

P roduction and inventory control; queueing systems; production planning systems; reliability and quality; application of operations research in telecommunication networks analysis, manufacturing and service systems.

Profile

D r. Liu obtained his BEng in the Department of Shipbuilding Engineering and MEng in management engineering form Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). He worked as an engineer in Hu Dong Shipbuilding Yard in Shanghai and an assistant lecturer in the Department of Management Engineering at HUST. At the University of Toronto, he studied in the Department of Industrial Engineering. After receiving his PhD degree in January 1990 for his contribution to queueing theory, he went back to teach at HUST. Before joining HKUST, he also researched and taught at the University of Toronto. Dr Liu has published in the Journal of Applied Probability, Queueing Systems, and Operations Research Letters, Opsearch etc.

At HKUST, Dr. Liu teaches Operations Research, Production Planning and Control, and Special Topics in Stochastic Models. His research activities are centred around stochastic models in operations research and applications of these models in business processes and engineering systems. He is actively working in stochastic inventory control models and in production planning and control systems. His goal in this area is to develop flexible and implementable planning and control systems based on the emerging new manufacturing and logistics concepts. Dr. Liu is also collaborating with colleagues in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering to study call admission control and routing in high speed telecommunication networks. Other on-going research projects include: outpatient appointment systems for clinics in Hong Kong, quality control and maintenance systems for manufacturing cells, and probability distribution classes generated by absorbing Markov chains.
